Why most baseball training does not transfer to games
Your athlete has done the lessons. The cage reps. The tee work. The pitching machine sessions. The swing looks clean. The mechanics seem right. And then a live pitcher throws — different timing, different rhythm, a little movement on the ball — and the swing that looked sharp in practice disappears.
This is not a talent problem. It is not a work ethic problem. It is a training design problem. And it has a specific cause.
Traditional baseball instruction is built on a top-down model. A coach identifies what the correct swing looks like, breaks it into positions and checkpoints, and drills those positions until the athlete can reproduce them on command. Against a predictable machine at a fixed speed from a fixed release point, this works. The swing holds because the environment never changes.
Live pitching changes everything. The release point moves. The timing shifts. The ball does something unexpected at the plate. The perfectly drilled mechanical position the athlete spent months building was never trained to survive that variability — and it does not.
What ecological dynamics actually means
Ecological dynamics is the science of how movement emerges from the relationship between an athlete and their environment. Not from the athlete alone. Not from the environment alone. From the relationship between them.
The key insight is this: a baseball swing is not a stored program the brain retrieves and executes. It is assembled in real time from the continuous interaction between what the athlete's body is currently organized to do and the information coming in from the pitcher, the ball, and the situation.
This means you cannot separate the swing from the environment it happens in. The swing that gets trained against a pitching machine is a swing built for a pitching machine. It does not automatically transfer to a live pitcher because the perceptual information driving the movement is completely different.

The 150 millisecond problem
A baseball swing happens in approximately 150 milliseconds. That is less time than a blink.
Traditional strength training develops peak force production in approximately 250 milliseconds. The strength window and the swing window do not overlap. A player can spend an entire off-season in the weight room getting measurably stronger and arrive at the plate unable to access any of that strength within the time the swing actually allows.
What determines hitting performance within a 150 millisecond window is not how much force the body can eventually produce. It is how organized the body is before the swing begins. How quickly it can remove slack from the kinetic chain. How well it pre-tensions the right muscles in anticipation of the pitch — before the barrel ever starts moving.
This quality — the ability to read an incoming pitch and organize the body around it before the swing initiates — is not developed by traditional strength training. It is not developed by mechanical drilling. It is developed by training the perception-action connection directly, in environments that represent the real demands of live hitting.
Frans Bosch and the coordination foundation
Frans Bosch is a Dutch sports scientist whose work on human movement and athletic coordination has quietly influenced the training methods of elite sport across multiple disciplines. His framework identifies two categories of movement components.
Attractors are the stable coordination patterns that define the movement — the deep structure of the swing that stays consistent across different pitches and situations. Fluctuators are the adaptive, variable responses that allow the stable attractor to succeed across an infinite variety of specific conditions. A great hitter has a stable attractor — you recognize their swing across a whole season — and highly developed fluctuators — they can adjust to any pitch in any count in any situation.
Traditional training develops attractors. It drills one pattern until it is consistent. What it never develops is fluctuator capacity — the ability to adapt that pattern in real time to conditions that were never practiced. This is why mechanically sound hitters struggle with pitchers who have unusual deliveries, deceptive timing, or quality secondary pitches. The attractor is there. The fluctuator capacity to adapt it is not.

What this looks like in training
Every session at Silverback Athlete begins with observation. Not a warmup routine. Not a preset program. Andrew watches the athlete move — a few swings, a few throws, a short sprint — and reads what the movement is currently organized to do. Where the chain breaks. Where the slack lives. What the rate limiter is.
The training environment for that session is built around what the movement shows — not around a predetermined plan. The athlete is not being installed with a correct pattern. The environment is being designed so that a better pattern becomes the most natural solution.
Tools like the aqua bag create an unstable, shifting load that the nervous system cannot solve with a fixed mechanical response. It has to stay adaptive — which is exactly the quality that live pitching demands. Constraint-based swing work puts the athlete in situations where certain movement solutions become impossible and others become inevitable, allowing the nervous system to discover efficient patterns rather than being told what they are.
Every session ends in a representative game condition — something that looks and feels like the actual game — so that whatever emerged in training gets tested in the environment where it needs to hold.
